Tangos (Absolute beginners and those wishing to expand)
In this class students deepen their understanding of the mechanics of flamenco steps with an emphasis on the importance of mastering good transference of weight. A short choreography in the Tangos style will be learnt and each student will make decisions about what they would like to express through their dancing. They will be encouraged to think about the overall structure of the choreography and how to make it work as a whole, looking at moments of tension and release and how to bring the dance to a climax. An introduction to the style specific 'compás' (rhythms) will lead to students taking on the challenge of flamenco 'palmas' (clapping): keeping a steady rhythm and providing a strong rhythmical base to accompany each other as they dance. Skirts and heeled shoes are not necessary but recommended. Please be sure that shoes are closed, with sturdy, wide heels if you are going to wear them (character shoes are a good option).


Technique (Everyone interested)
This class takes students on an intense journey into the world of flamenco with a very different perspective. Through the use of applied somatic techniques to facilitate movement ideas and concepts that are culturally specific to flamenco, students will explore some of the movement language of this traditional form and its links to other dance styles. Breaking from the idea that flamenco is a movement language, this class will focus on some of the essential components of said system such as the ‘rebote’, ‘remate’, weight shifts, torque and ‘llamada’. Similarities between different movement vocabularies will be emphasized, making this class ideal for students of other dance styles. Skirts and heeled shoes are not necessary but recommended. Please be sure that shoes are closed, with sturdy, wide heels if you are going to wear them (character shoes are a good option).


Bata de Cola (Previous experience not necessary, bata de cola not necessary)
This class lays the foundations for the use of the Bata de Cola (train-dress), integrating both traditional techniques for its movement, as well as applied somatic techniques to ensure a healthy and safe use of the body. Ideal for dancers of other styles as well as those with previous knowledge of flamenco and Bata de Cola, the class focuses on proper alignment, control of the upper body and obtaining good balance. Students will master a few simple steps and the mechanics of propelling the skirt in an organic way, that integrates all the information provided to avoid injury. Bata de Cola skirts are recommended but not essential and skirts may be shared between students. Some technique will be executed without the skirt, so bring comfortable dance trousers. Shoes must be worn for this workshop. Please ensure that they are closed, with sturdy, wide heels (character shoes are a good option).


The Mantón and its uses in Flamenco
This class will focus on the use of the mantón in traditional flamenco. The different exercises will ensure every participant understands their own body movement with this prop as well as understanding the relationship of the mantón with the sensitive, rhythmic and aesthetic character of flamenco. Focusing on the proper alignment/use of the rib-cage, shoulders and hips, students will explore some of the movement language that can be enhanced by its addition to a dance. Some elements of the Feldenkrais Method will be utilized to facilitate movement ideas and concepts, as well as, avoiding injury. Skirts and heeled shoes are not necessary for this class though heeled shoes are recommended to start understanding how the shift in the center of gravity changes how the mantón moves. Please be sure that shoes are closed, with sturdy, wide heels if you are going to wear them (character shoes are a good option).

Bailarina, Coreógrafa y Antropóloga

Niurca Márquez, Dancer and Choreographer

Born in New Jersey in 1976, Niurca has an extensive dance background that bridges two continents. She holds a BA in Dance, an MA in Cultural Studies and has trained professionally both in the US and Spain. In addition to dancing and choreographing for various Flamenco companies, she has also worked in other dance forms such as Afro-Cuban and Contemporary Dance. Her choreography has been featured in various programs including the Flamenc Empiric Festival in Barcelona. She has been a guest lecturer and artist-in-residence at institutions of higher learning, teacher-training workshops and conferences. Her work is based on the integration of body awareness through techniques from the Feldenkrais Method and Katsugen and an understanding of Flamenco as a movement language; the intangible translation of concept and tradition into motion and being fully present in the moment.

Niurca Márquez, Bailarina y Coreógrafa

Nacida en New Jersey en 1976, ha bailado desde la edad de 7 años. En 1993 ingresa en el programa de danza de Florida International University y en 1995 presenta su primera colaboración coreográfica con la bailarina discapacitada Marjorie Bernnet como parte del programa Florida Dances del Florida Dance Festival, trabajo que también presentan como artistas invitadas de la compañía Karen Peterson and Dancers unos meses más tarde. En 1996, tras años de estudio de ballet clásico, contemporáneo, y clásico español, su inquietud por el baile la llevó a Nuevo Méjico donde continuó su entrenamiento y actuó como artista invitada de Dance España y miembro de Alma Flamenca en el Festival Flamenco Internacional de 1997. A su regreso a Miami, fue una de cinco bailarinas escogidas como solistas para la coreografía de Susana Yamuchi (Brazil, contemporáneo) titulada Interactions presentada en el festival FLA/BRA 1997 y giró con Ballet Flamenco Ángela Rhea en Spanish Extravaganza. En 1998 recibió una beca para cursar estudios de danza afro-cubana en la Escuela Nacional de Arte en La Habana, Cuba. Desde el 2000 forma parte de Bailes Ferrer pasando a ser solista y coreógrafa de la misma en 2006, colaborando con diversos artistas de flamenco, contemporáneo y músicas del mundo. Fue solista de Duende Ballet Español bajo la dirección de Rosa Mercedes del 2000 al 2003. Ha presentado coreografía propia en programas del Cove/Rincón de Miami, la Orquesta Sinfónica de Hallandale, Ballet Rosario Suárez, el Departamento de Teatro y Danza de FIU y el Departamento de Música y Danza de la Universidad de Kansas. Niurca ha estudiado con maestros de flamenco reconocidos como Belén Maya, Pastora e Israel Galván, Rafaela Carrasco, Lola y Carmela Greco, Andrés Marín, Estrella Morena y Pablo Rodarte al igual que con reconocidas figuras de la danza contemporánea como Bill Evans entre otros. Sus trabajo como bailarina y coreógrafa han sido reconocido con premios como el Artist Access (2003 y 2006) y el Artist Enhancement Grant (2005 y 2007), otorgados por los consejos de cultura de la ciudad de Miami y el estado de la Florida respectivamente. En 2007 fue invitada como artista en residencia en la Universidad de Kansas, donde tuvo la oportunidad de dictar clases de técnica, repertorio y historia del flamenco y montar dos coreografías nuevas para el Departamento de Música y Danza en colaboración con guitarrista y compositor, José Luis Rodríguez. En ese mismo año completó el guión y la adaptación de poesías de Alfonsina Storni, además de montar parte de la coreografía de Alfonsina: La Mujer en el Mar, un espectáculo con música original de José Luis Rodríguez y con la participación de la cantante cubana Gema Corredera que se estrenó en el Festival Flamenco in the Sun 2007. En 2008 presenta su coreografía titulada “Twice Displaced”, con dirección artística de Belén Maya en el espectáculo “Works in Transition” en el marco del Festival Flamenco in the Sun del mismo año en Miami que mas adelante presentará en el Primer Festival Flamenc Empiric en Barcelona. Recientemente ha colaborado en el espectáculo “De mis manos” de José Luis Rodríguez con coreografía propia y compartiendo escenario con Belén Maya y el cantaor Juan Jose Amador.

Niurca es Licenciada en Danza y Literatura Hispanoamericana y tiene un Masters en Estudios Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (Antropología Cultural). Ha sido Coordinadora del Intercultural Dance and Music Institute de Florida International Universtiy donde coordinó y desarrollo material de estudios para el Latin American and Caribbean Summer Dance Institute, el International Cultural Exchange Program y el Dancing Across Disciplines Program, una iniciativa federal diseñada para unir a profesores y estudiantes de antropología, economía, ciencias políticas, estudios religiosos e historia con profesores, estudiantes y artistas de danza y música en un intento de crear una visión más global e integrada de estas disciplinas.

Ha sido conferenciante y profesora invitada en varias instituciones de enseñanza universitaria y ha diseñado e impartido diversos cursos de formación para profesores de danza enfocados en la importancia de la música y la danza dentro del ámbito de la cultura y los sistemas educacionales. En 1998 y 1999 recibió becas para completar estudios de campo y cursar estudios de danza afro-cubana en La Habana y Matanzas (Cuba). Parte de este trabajo se presentó y fue publicado entre las ponencias más significativas de la 19ª Conferencia de ILLASSA en Austin, TX y más tarde en la 4ª Conferencia de Estudios Cubanos y cubano-americanos de CRI en Miami.

Desde 1998 Niurca a intentando anudar su trabajo como artista con la producción ejecutiva y artística en diversos proyectos con FIU, Miami Dade College, Ballet Rosario Suárez, FUNDarte Inc. y Bailes Ferrer entre otros. Durante los últimos cuatro años, lo ha hecho por medio de la producción de eventos de Flamenco y festivales del mismo creando así un vínculo entre artistas en Sevilla, Madrid y Miami, al igual que programas de estudio intensivo en Sevilla para bailarines profesionales y aficionados en Miami.

Como profesora y coreógrafa su trabajo se enfoca en la integración de la autoconciencia del cuerpo en la danza, llegando a ello por vía de un conocimiento más completo del cuerpo utilizando elementos del método Feldenkrais y técnicas de interpretación y el uso del espacio. Su gran capacidad para la interpretación la llevan a una continua búsqueda de un lenguaje del cuerpo en el que la danza traspasa los límites de la tradición flamenca. En este sentido, Niurca crea un espacio para la exploración del movimiento como sistema de comunicación no-verbal y herramienta para el desarrollo de nuevas ideas, tanto en su manera de bailar, como a la hora de llevar este concepto a la enseñanza y al lenguaje académico.
